Model Train Stores

Model train stores are a subset of hobby stores. More common are dedicated hobby stores that have model trains and other, related products. These include model airplane, remote controlled vehicles, paint sets and games. Given the overlap of some of the customers, and even merchandise, this isn’t a major problem. Some items, such as miniature buildings or trees can be used for WWII dioramas or 1930s train station layouts.

Model train stores are more common in high population centers where the quantity of dedicated hobbyists is high enough to support the hobby. Some parts of the country are also more traditionally friendly to model trains. Where these do not exist, hobby stores that cater to a variety of hobbies carry the weight.

The advantage of these more specialized stores is the experience the staff receives, knowing what is available throughout the hobby, generally one they share. They tend to be able to watch the trends and have contacts, which can provide insight into the state and direction of the hobby or segments of it. They tend to have experience with the hobby itself, and can often offer advice and suggestions for newcomers based on their own or other’s experiences. An owner who has been in the business for decades may even be a well known name in the field.

Customers are also an important resource. Not only for the knowledge they can provide to a newcomer, but also for the sense of community in knowing you aren’t the only one with such an unusual hobby. This can support a club or team effort, especially for a specialty train store. Stores will normally have a core customer base who might even develop a culture of showing up at the same time each week in order to socialize and tell war stories. For hobbyists who think they are alone, the idea of twenty to thirty fellow hobbyists, all gathered around and chatting over important issues like when a helix is permissible is a heady thought. Cooperative endeavors, from a carpool to a convention to a shared layout of major proportions become possible with group efforts when they might be impossible alone.

Most purchases are paint and terrain accessories, such as artificial vegetation. These are cheap and are often impulse buys. For more expensive purchases, a store provides a resource to ask opinions, see if anyone has experience with similar items and magazines or newsletters, which can connect the hobbyist with the rest of the world.
